Frequently Asked Questions
What Does Care from a licensed midwife look like?
Midwives are trained and licensed medical professionals specializing in pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and comprehensive reproductive care. The midwifery model centers on education, individualized attention, and the protection and promotion of physiologic birth, while nurturing the whole family throughout the journey.
When you enter care, you can expect personalized, evidence-based prenatal visits in my home office. Appointments are typically scheduled monthly from 12–28 weeks, every two weeks from 29–36 weeks, and weekly from 37 weeks until birth.
Between 35–37 weeks, I will also come to your home for a dedicated home visit to see your birth space, review supplies, and ensure you feel fully prepared and supported.
When active labor is established, I join you in your birth space and provide skilled, attentive care for both mother and baby.
After birth, postpartum and newborn care continues with attentive follow-up through the first six weeks. The first three postpartum visits take place in your home to support your recovery and baby’s transition. The final two visits, typically between weeks 3–6, are held in my office as we continue monitoring healing, feeding, and overall well-being.
Is Homebirth Safe?
Yes! Homebirth is safe for individuals who are at full-term (37-42 weeks gestation) in their pregnancy, who have been evaluated for risk factors, determining that they are considered “low risk” at the time of birth, and who are attended by licensed professional midwives throughout labor and delivery.
Who can give birth at home?
Anyone who is not considered “high-risk” is able to choose to give birth at home. If you aren’t sure about your risk status, schedule a consultation with Kari to help determine if you are able to give birth in an out-of-hospital setting.
Can I transfer Care to a MIDWIFE At any point in my pregnancy?
Yes! The more time we have to get to know one another and develop a nurturing, compassionate provider client relationship the better - but if you opt to switch to the midwifery model later in pregnancy, that is absolutely okay, too.
Is Home birth covered by insurance?
Some insurance companies will cover all or a portion of the cost of your home birth. The best way to find out if your insurance will cover your birth is you contact them directly.
Because of their known history of supporting home birth families, I work directly with Christian Healthshare Ministries to ensure a smooth insurance billing process and coverage of care.
While I do not work directly with other insurance companies on your behalf, I can provide the needed documentation and information to you for insurance billing.
HOW IS MIDWIFERY CARE PRICED?
Homebirth Midwifery care is unlike any form of perinatal and postpartum care available in the United States. From personalized care, to attentive in-home prenatal visits, to six full weeks of postpartum care for both mother and baby, your experience with a Midwife is bound to look dramatically different than any previous care you have received. Between the time taken for thorough prenatal and postpartum, being on-call for labor and birth, and the flexibility needed for midwives to be able to tend to their clients in the comfort of the client’s own home, Midwives spend countless hours caring for the families they serve.
The median hospital birth cost in the state of California is over $16,000 - more than double the cost of traditional, holistic Midwifery care - but since most hospital births are covered by insurance, many families never know the total cost of the care they received. By true comparison, the care received within the Midwifery model is much more personalized and actually considerably more cost effective.
